CASA WABI: a Remote Artist Retreat in Oaxaca

Text by Collecteurs Editorial

Photography by Jessica and Evrim Oralkan

Deep in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, along the remote coastline of Puerto Escondido, lies Fundación Casa Wabi. Established by artist Bosco Sodi, the foundation’s aim is for artists to engage with the local community, exchanging skills and knowledge as they go.

The commanding structure, designed by Tadao Ando, houses an exhibition space and artist residency, while the unique layout of the main building allows for expansive views of the Pacific Ocean from the rear side of the property and lush, green mountains from the front. The palm roof—built using an ancient method called the palapa palm technique—lends a uniquely Mexican flair to the towering concrete structure—an instantly recognizable characteristic of Ando’s work.
